As Donna got ready for dinner with her parents, she thought about how much she really hated lying to them. The problem was that Felice gave her no choice. If she found out that David was living with her and Kelly, Felice would make her leave or make David leave, destroying a perfectly convenient living arrangement.
She walked into the living room still putting on her earrings. Kelly was sitting with a book at the end of the couch, the end nearest the telephone. In comparison with Donna's, Kelly's problem seemed much simpler. She and Dylan had had a falling out in Europe, and now that they were both back in Beverly Hills, she was making herself miserable by not talking to him.
"Oh, go ahead and call him," Donna said. "You know you want to."
"Why would I want to do that? He cheated on me." Kelly barely looked up from her book.
"Yes, and now it's time for you to go crawling back." Donna had no use for philosophy, feminist or otherwise. Generally, she was in favor of doing whatever would make the most people happiest.
"That's disgusting," Kelly said as she closed her book on a finger. "Besides, I don't actually know he cheated. Maybe he was telling the truth. Maybe it was my fault."
She was obviously working herself into a tizzy. She was going to take up psychology in college, which might be a good thing. She could use herself as a class project. "What was you're fault?" Donna asked. "I'm all confused."
"That's because there's something I didn't tell you."
This could be good. "What?"
Kelly told her about the bartender at the café—a handsome French hunk named Gaston. Gaston had asked many times to take her for a drive, and to teach Dylan a lesson, Kelly, at last, said yes. They got back about two in the morning, and Dylan was at his table in the café waiting for her.
"Sounds like an old movie. What happened?"
"Well, he was suddenly very possessive and demanded to know where I'd been. I told him that Gaston had taken me for a ride in the country, and then we'd slept together. Dylan asked me if Gaston was any good, so I slapped him."
"You hit Dylan?" Donna asked, wide-eyed with astonishment.
"Yeah." Kelly didn't seem happy about it.
"And you slept with Gaston?"
"Of course not."
"Oh." Donna found herself to be both relieved and disappointed. "Then what were you doing out half the night?"
"He drove me all over the French countryside for like three hours, pawing me all the time. And he smelled really bad—I don't think he'd had a bath lately, and I don't think he'd ever brushed his teeth."
Donna saw that Kelly's problem was more difficult than she'd imagined. Kelly had lied to somebody, too, and that always made making up more difficult. Still, telling Dylan the truth would not have the dire consequences of telling Felice the truth. Dylan might be angry, but one way or another that would be temporary. If Felice found out about David, she could make Donna's life impossible forever.
